PRACTISE MODERATION WHEN MAKING DEMAND

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 9 — All ethnic groups in the country must practise moderation when making demands on the government for the sake of national stability, said International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz.

There was no place for any group that practised extremism or resorted to extreme acts whether based on religion, race or sentiments, said Rafidah, who is also Wanita Umno head.

“We can only survive in a situation based on moderation,” she told reporters after a special meeting and dialogue with the Badan-badan Ekonomi Melayu (BEM) organised by the Gagasan Badan Ekonomi Melayu (Gabem), here Tuesday.

Rafidah, who represented Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, said if every ethnic group strongly advocated moderation, the country would continue to be stable.

Rafidah said that as a representative of the ruling government, she was very happy with Gabem’s stand in giving its full support to the government.

Meanwhile, she suggested that Gabem became the forum for discussing issues or policies that they felt needed improvement.

Meanwhile, Gabem president Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Tamby Chik said that the Malay economic community wanted the government to take action against the extremist groups who could jeopardise stability and racial harmony in the country.

“If our country is threatened, it means that the Indian, Chinese and Malay economic communities would be adversely affected,” he said.

At the function, Gabem, which has 50,000 members, had handed over a memorandum to Rafidah.

Rahim said the memorandum was to show the support of the Malay economic community for the country’s top leadership.

Gabem, which is Umno’s economic wing, among other things, plays an important role in ensuring that the Bumiputera and Malay community enjoyed their rights in the country’s development.
